Kenneth Hayes -  Soil Association

"Over the past 2 years I have been coordinating the Soil Association's consultation on air freighted organic products. The debate is arguably one of the hardest to reconcile when considering how and where we produce our food. Through the consultation I have been able to discuss with businesses, NGOs and governments how to tackle the closely linked issues of climate change and development through trade, which are thrown into sharp relief by air freight. I am also involved in progressing Soil Association Ethical Trade; these are recently developed social justice standards for organic products. Previous to joining the Soil Association standards department, I was involved in academic research in the area of molecular biology."

COMPETING PRESSURES FOR LAND & FOOD MILES

.

.

.

This forum will commence with an overview of some of the key factors impacting on future supplies of food and, in particular, the competing pressures for land for food, fuel, water, environmental and leisure use. Land is in diminishing supply for food production and the impact of climate change and changing consumer requirements are also impacting greatly. This forum will seek to get focus on what are the key factors and how they impact directly on all involved in the fruit and vegetable sector. This will lead into a debate on local and international supply and how current conditions are impacting on the nature of the food miles question and its future significance and application.

John Moverley has been expressing strong views on the issues involved in competing land pressures and, with recent changes in the world economies and greater emphasis on food production, many of these issues have now come to the fore for all involved. He will introduce Nigel Jenney - Chief Executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium who will initiate the debate on local and international supply and how current conditions are impacting on the nature of the food miles debate. Other speakers include Kenneth Hayes, well known for his stance on food miles, Volkert Engelsman CEO Eosta .
