Michael Stephen

Michael Stephen is a Barrister and former Member of Parliament.  He was a Member of the Environment Select Committee of the House of Commons, and is now Chairman of Symphony Environmental Ltd. and Chairman of the Oxobiodegradable Plastics Association.  He is a Member of the British Standards Institute Panel on Biodegradability of  Plastics.

Professor Gerald Scott

Professor Gerald Scott, DSc, FRSC, C.Chem, FIMMM is Professor Emeritusin Chemistry and Polymer Science of Aston University, UK. He
established an internationally recognised Centre for the study of Polymer Degradation and Stabilisation at the University in 1967. Over 500 technical papers have been published by him, and with members of staff, research fellows and students of this Group, initially in the field of polymer stabilisation and antioxidant mechanisms but more recently in the controlled biodegradation of commercial polymers. Professor Scott is a member of the British Standards InstitutionCommittee on Packaging and the Environment (PKW/0) concerned with the biodegradation of polymers in the environment and is co-chairman of the Biodegradability Panel PKW/0/SC1/E1 concerned with developing a new British Standard for the biodegradation and composting of oxo-biodegradable plastics. He is also a member of PRI/82 Thermoplastic Materials Committee of BSI, and represents BSi on TC 261/SC4/WG2 Degradability and Organic Recovery of Packaging and Packaging Wastes Working Group and on TC 249/WG9 Characterisation of Degradability Working Group of the European Standards organisation (CEN).

This will feature three main speakers. Michael Stephen is Chairman of the Oxo-Biodegradable Association and a recently appointed member of the British Standards institute Panel on Biodegradability of Plastics. He will lead off the presentations followed by Professor Gerald Scott who has an Emeritus Chair in Chemistry and Polymer Science of Aston University. The presentations will be concluded by Alan Campbell from the Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association who will develop current thinking on innovative solutions for packaging. His presentation will be followed by a period of question and answer to all the speakers.
